Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) intended for Eve and a sculpture of Adam to be included in the bronze doorway The Gates of Hell that he worked on for decades for the French government. For the compositions of both Adam and Eve, he was inspired by paintings by Michelangelo. Eve's body is naturalistic, and she closes herself off, suffering for her sin. Several replications of Eve at different sizes were created as stand-alone works, and Rodin also incorporated the figure into other sculptures. Please note that our cast is a different size than the popular Petite Eve. Original bronze castings and marble carvings can be found in museums including the Musée Rodin in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
